The International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) is devoted to the principles of sustainable laboratories and related high-technology facilities, from design to engineering to operation.
Through worldwide partnerships and the exchange of technical expertise, I2SL will encourage the development of high-tech facilities that address the rapid pace of science, medicine, research, and development in an ever-changing and dynamic environment.
I2SL's mission addresses three key elements:
- Promotion — To raise awareness within the specialized building sector for creating resource-effective and environmentally responsible science, science education, testing, medicine, research, and development facilities.
- Implementation — To encourage the collaborative creation of technologically advanced, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsive laboratories throughout the world.
- Education — To facilitate the application of a sustainable "whole-building" approach in designing, engineering, constructing, operating, and using laboratories and other advanced facilities.
As founder members of the Singapore chapter of I2SL (I2SL first overseas chapter) we know that the global focus on energy efficiency is something which Singapore takes very seriously. Recently completed projects have demonstrated that laboratories consume significantly more energy than necessary and with a few small changes we can reduce cost of operation by as much as 50%.
